Making Budwig Protocol for dogs

Ingredients :

At the moment my mixture is :

* 1 tablespoon of pure cold-pressed Flaxseed oil
* (Mixer) 1 egg yolk OR 2 tablespoons of chosen cheese OR 6 tablespoons yoghurt

Mix the above two ingredients till no oil is seen suspended and it’s all a consistent colour and texture (mix as little as possible to arrive at this state)

then blend in with a quick stir :

* 1 tablespoon of fresh ground whole flaxseeds

Mixers – Cheese

Dr Budwig used the very natural and unprocessed ‘quark’ from old style german recipes, while most of the cottage cheese easily available is full of preservatives and additives. It is challenging to find good quality organic cheese locally. It’s also hard to find truly ‘organic’ cheese, and even harder to find low-fat organic. Dr Budwig’s theory on low-fat was I think related to avoiding more than 5% animal fats in human diet, so I am not sure the issue is as critical for dogs. Low fat cheeses are also generally high in the cancer-fuelling sugar.

Mixers – Yoghurt

Reading the ingredients list in the supermarket is always a disappointment, with salts, emulsifiers, sugar, skim milk powder etc. all added.  I can’t see the sense in using ‘artificial’ ingredients.  I was considering using the yoghurt to add substance, but not convinced it is well suited to dogs (even full fat yoghurt has quite a lot of sugar from the milk, and low fat usually means high sugar).  I would choose normal yoghurt over low fat if I go ahead, but worried it might contain too many unsuitable fats.  I understand you need to use twice as much yoghurt in the mix compared to cheese.

Mixers – Egg Yolk

Organic free ranges eggs are probably the closest to what a dog would encounter in the wild. They also contain sulfurated proteins as required by the Ludwig Diet. They aren’t deemed suitable for humans (see the healing cancer site) because they are 31% fat, but I’m still cautiously optimistic they are more suited to the dog version of the diet.

I feel any of the above mixes will be sufficiently limited in fat and sugar to do more good than harm, provided the cheese or yoghurt ingredients are checked carefully. Egg yolk seems easier and more natural to me.

Current choice of mixer – Egg Yolk

The egg yolk which also contains the essential sulfur protein is potentially suited because :

a. Egg yolk (not white) is generally recommended as a protein part of a healthy canine diet
b. It’s a lot more natural and likely to be found in the wild than pre-processed cheese :)

I tried it with the dogs, and they loved it, the mix seemed to blend well, so at this stage I’m trying the egg yolk/flaxseed oil combo.

Of course, use FREE RANGE ORGANIC eggs. None of these cage farm products of torture, they will only damage your dog nearly as much as they are damaging the poor hen that laid them.

The potential downsides of egg yolk are the high fat, causing pancreatitis, and too much iron in the diet (excess iron helps cancer grow).  The healing cancer site mentioned Dr Budwig’s warning that animal fats fight the cells ability to gain oxygen.  This is where I think logically there must be some difference between the human and canine protocol – dogs are surely built to consume and use animal fats ?  Regardless, at this stage egg yolk seems the best companion for the flax oil and that’s what we’re trying.
