Forbidden Foods To Keep Away From Your Dogs

As we celebrate Thanksgiving this year, remember to keep the following forbidden foods from your dogs.

Turkey bone: Absolutely no no. While it does not splinter as easily as chicken bone, it still splinters and can cause obstruction or laceration of the digestive system.

Turkey skin: No because of high fat content and spices that can be on it. Spice in general is bad or even fatal to dogs. Dogs can suffer from a condition called pancreatitis when given too much fatty food.

Alcohol beverages: Can cause intoxication, coma, death. Symptoms of alcohol poisoning are slow respiratory rate, increased urination, wobbly movement, excited, uncharacteristic behavior, depression, disorientation, hypothermia, seizures and cardiac arrest.

Almond: Avoid nuts for dogs but a small amount of almond is fine according to the ASPCA. All nuts contain fats, which can lead to gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting and diarrhea. High fat contents can also potentially leads to inflammatory condition of the pancreas known as pancreatitis. Many commercially sold nuts are salted which in large volume could potentially cause sodium ion toxicosis.

Cake: People food is generally not good for dogs. Most human cakes are made with high content of dairy products such as butter and milk that dogs cannot tolerate very well. It also contains high amount of sugar. Some may also contain chocolate or cocoa powder that is all potentially fatal to dogs.

Fat food: Can cause pancreatitis. Signs include abdominal pain, acute onset of vomiting, and diarrhea. A hunched posture can be a sign of Pancreatitis pain.

Fat trimmings: Can cause pancreatitis. Signs include abdominal pain, acute onset of vomiting, and diarrhea. A hunched posture can be a sign of Pancreatitis pain.

Ham: Should never be given to dogs due to its high fat content. While some dogs might be fine when given minimal amount as treats, it could trigger an attack of pancreatitis in others that need to be more cautious with fat levels.

Ice cream: People food is generally not good for dogs. Ice cream is a dairy product and most dogs cannot tolerate dairy products very well. It also contains high amount of sugar. Some may also contain chocolate or cocoa powder that is all potentially fatal to dogs.

Sugar-free candies: May be sweetened with Xylitol that can cause serious, possible life threatening problems for dogs.

Keep Doggie Safe Labor Day Pet Safety

Labor day signals the unofficial end of summer and can also be a time of distress for dogs. While backyard cookouts are in full swing, your dog could be getting into some dangerous things. Fatty foods, hot grills, and cans full of delectable garbage can all lead to stomach upset or injury for your pet. We have some tips on Labor Day pet safety to help keep him safe this holiday weekend so everyone enjoys the last summer hoorah.

The Grill

All those juicy, mouth-watering steaks, hot dogs and hamburgers cooking on the grill sure smell good, and your pet thinks so, too. Despite the heat, it might be too tempting for him to stay away. Monitor the grill at all times to make sure your dog or cat doesn’t jump up on the grill in search of something good to eat and come away with serious burns.

The Bones

Many pet owners don’t realize how dangerous cooked bones are for their pets. Besides being a choking hazard, bones can cause broken teeth, mouth injuries, internal blockage or intestinal perforations. Do your dog a favor and dispose of bones properly.

The Garbage

It’s no secret that dogs love garbage and Labor Day celebrations provide plenty of unsupervised access to lots of it. Barbeque garbage can cause gastrointestinal problems in your pet, so pay close attention to what he’s doing and be sure all garbage is disposed of properly. Things like corn cobs, fruit pits, plastic or foil used to wrap food, shish kabob skewers and other food related garbage can cause stomach upset, blockage or perforation in the intestines if eaten.

The Heat

We may be nearing the end of summer, but Mother Nature hasn’t gotten the memo yet – the weather is still hot, hot, hot. Your pet loves being outside, too, but he’s susceptible to heat exhaustion and heat stroke, so keep a close eye on him and make sure he has access to plenty of cool drinking water.

One way to help keep your pet cool is with our dog cooling products. All of our cooling products are on sale for the Labor Day holiday at 15% off!

The Food

Letting your pet eat too much fatty foods (hamburgers, hot dogs, etc.) can result in stomach upset or pancreatitis. Allow him to snack on a few healthy treats such as fresh fruits and vegetables, and avoid feeding him fatty meats.

Following these tips will ensure you and your pet enjoy a safe holiday weekend. Together, you both can have a great time with celebrating with family and friends. Happy Labor Day!
